At Sumcab, we have been developing and manufacturing specific cable solutions for the industrial sector for 25 years. That experience enables us to fully adapt ourselves to each market and its needs, which may vary enormously depending on the sector in question.
The Transport and Mobility market includes a series of sub-sectors that include the Railway sector. Within this industry, special category traffic cables are the most commonly used.
In particular, the Databus Sumtraffic cables are specifically designed for use on trains, metro systems and buses. Furthermore, the various functions performed by these cables include the communication systems on a locomotive, the communications networks between trains, passenger information systems, on-board control cameras, etc.
What are railway sector cables used for?
The technological transformation currently under way in the railway sector is incentivising the use of more specific cables to streamline the transition. The applications for these cables can be found on the trains themselves, at stations, in overhead signalling wires, safety systems, etc.
From among those many cables, we should particularly mention the cables for railway vehicles (Rolling Stock), which have been designed and certified for use inside trains.
Rolling stock cables enable the necessary power supply, perform data transmission tasks and maintain exhaustive control over numerous applications, such as:
- The electric traction converter
- The operator control panel
- The train control system
- The brake system
- Management of the automatic door opening and closing system
- Supervision of the battery
- Supervision of the motor
- Control boxes
- Entertainment systems
- Information systems
- The whole coupling system
- The whole lighting system
- The whole ventilation system, including the air conditioning
Sumcab offers three types of cables for rolling stock:
- Cables for control systems
- Cables for data transmission
- Cables for power transfer
Types of cables for the railway sector
Sumtraffic cables are of vital importance in many installations for the railway sector and also share many applications with two other well-known cable types that we produce: Sumflex and Sumsave.
Characteristics of Sumtraffic cables
Cables for the railway sector need to be versatile, but that is not the only characteristic that defines the Sumtraffic series.
Safety and reliability are also key factors in the development of these models. Sumcab always seeks to develop and achieve maximum efficiency and quality in our products.
Sumtraffic cables meet international DIN EN 45545-2 standards for fire protection on railway vehicles.
The purpose of these regulations and, therefore, Sumtraffic cables is to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out, control the speed and extinction of the fire, and prevent the damage that would be caused by a fire to machinery, passengers and crew. Sumtraffic cables reduce the heat, smoke and toxic gases that are produced.
Characteristics of Sumflex cables
Sumflex cables are also used on numerous railway projects. In particular, the Sumflex® NSGAFÖU model is used for the cabling on machines, tools, devices, apparatus, and connection and control boxes.
These are strong cables (as is standard for the entire Sumflex range) capable of withstanding impacts, oils, direct exposure to UV rays, chemical products in general and water.
In terms of their fire-resistant properties, one of the main features of this type of cable is that it does not spread flames, thereby helping to reduce the propagation of fire when it does occurs.
Characteristics of Sumsave cables
For the railway sector, Sumcab recommends two types of Sumsave cables; the Sumsave® NSHXAFÖU model and the Sumsave® Solar AR H1Z2Z2-K model.
The Sumsave® NSHXAFÖU model is a highly flexible cable, halogen-free and perfect for the cabling on machines, tools and devices.
This model offers numerous resistances to impacts, oils, UV rays and chemicals in general, as well as another advantage insofar as that it is free of harmful substances under RoHS II. Sumsave cables also have outstanding fire-resistance properties, such as not spreading flames, not spreading fire, low smoke opacity and low gas corrosiveness.
The Sumsave® Solar AR H1Z2Z2-K cable is a specific design for photovoltaic installations and specifically recommended for the connection between solar panels and the DC-AC inverter.
It offers the same fire-resistant properties as the Sumsave® NSHXAFÖU model but with the additional feature of being a design that is always used in outdoor installations. This quality guarantees both efficient operation and durability. It therefore offers outstanding resistance to both oils and UV rays.
